Apple and Pear Crisp is the Perfect Fall Dessert!

Fall is here, which means it’s apple season! I love baking with apples. Apple pie, apple butter, apple crumble…and this delicious Apple Pear Crisp!

This Apple Pear Crisp Recipe is made in the slow cooker and, honestly, it’s one of my favorite slow cooker desserts for fall.

It’s one of these desserts that just “feel” like chilly fall nights, cozy and warm.

Why you Should Make this Apple Pear Crisp

  • This Apple Pear Crisp is very similar to my Slow Cooker Apple Crumble recipe, with the addition of pears. So if you love apple crisp, you’ll love this recipe too.
  • The pears add a bit of a surprise flavor and offer a slightly different texture variation from the apples.
  • This recipe is made in the slow cooker, it’s super easy to make! Just add the ingredients to the crock and you are good to go!
  • Since this recipe takes approximately 4 hours in the slow cooker, it’s a nice dessert to prepare before dinner and have ready by the time dishes are done, especially if you’re having guests over.

I actually also love baking with pears in the fall but never incorporate them into as many recipes as I do apples. I definitely need to start experimenting more!

Ingredients needed for the Apple and Pear Fruit crisp

Ingredients at a glance, grab the full recipe in the card at the bottom of the post.

For the Crisp Topping:

  • Flour | All-purpose is fine.
  • Old-fashioned rolled oats | Don’t use quick cook oats, they will not hold up as well in the slow cooker.
  • Brown sugar
  • White sugar
  • Fall spices | Ground nutmeg, cinnamon, salt
  • Walnuts or pecans | Natural (not roasted or salted. They are for the topping, either will work.
  • Butter | Cold and cut into pieces

For the Filling

  • 3 large apples and 3 large pears | You will want these peeled, cored, and thickly sliced (about 6 cups is what is needed.) In the fall, you might find already peeled and sliced apples at your grocery store
  • Cornstarch |
  • Apple juice | If you don’t have apple juice, substitute 1 tbsp lemon juice, and the rest water.
  • Optional toppings: vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce

How to Make the Fruit Crisp in the Slow Cooker:

You’ll love how easy it is to make a fruit crisp in the slow cooker.

The hardest part is putting together this fruit crisp is the peeling of the apples and pears. (Luckily, I still have my pampered chef apple peeler core slicer I got when I hosted a party about 15 years ago. If you don’t know anyone who sells pampered chef, you can find these on Amazon too. Makes peeling fruit a breeze!)

  1. Peel, core, and slice the fruit into 1.5-inch pieces.Slow Cooker Apple Pear Crisp Recipe (2)
  2. In a large bowl, stir the flour, oats, brown sugar, 1/4 cup white sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and nuts together until combined. Slow Cooker Apple Pear Crisp Recipe (3)
  3. Add the butter and mix with a pastry blender, fork, or hands until pea-sized lumps are formed.
  4. Place the apple and pear slices in the base of the slow cooker. Stir in cornstarch and apple juice.
  5. Sprinkle flour/topping mixture evenly over fruit. Slow Cooker Apple Pear Crisp Recipe (4)
  6. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours / high for 2 hours.(make sure your slow cooker actually cooks on low- many of the newer ones actually run higher. If your’s cooks hot, you may want to shorten the cooking time.)
  7. Serve warm with a scoop (or 2) of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

The recipe does call for a small amount of apple juice – if you don’t have any and don’t want to buy an entire bottle, you can easily substitute it with lemon juice and water.

FAQ’s

Can You Freeze A Fruit Crisp?

It’s not recommended to freeze an already baked (or slow-cooked) fruit crisp as the topping will get mushy.

Can This Dessert Be Made Ahead?

The apple pear crisp is best served warm, directly from the crockpot.

If you want to prep ahead, What you could do is prep the fruit and toppings separately, bag them up and freeze them uncooked. That way when you are ready to bake or slow cook the recipe, all you have to do is dump the ingredients into the pot and cook. (If cooking from frozen, don’t thaw first, just add 5 to 10 minutes to the cooking time.)

What Are The Baking Instructions?

If you don’t want to slow cook this recipe, it can also be baked in the oven. The prep instructions for oven baking are the same but you will bake in an oven-safe dish at 350 F for 40 to 45 minutes.
