I would strongly consider getting the TS-462 ($629 on amazon) and then buying sodimm ram to upgrade it.

edit. TS-462 only has 2c/2T and this deal is 4C/4T so if you need the extra cores this deal is better.

The 462 with some extra RAM is a good option if you don't require the processing grunt of the 464.

This price for the 464 is around $9.00 more than I paid in September 2022 and I have not seen it near that since. In real terms this deal today is better….

Mine now has 32gb, a storage pool on the m.2's for OS and 4x4tb for second storage pool. Which has made it a bit quieter as it can get a bit busy and the discs get a bit noisy in the box…

There are 2 versions of QNAP TS-464.

8GB version ram is soldered while 4GB version ram can be upgraded with 16GB or even more.

More ram is critical to serve multiple users, as well as install utilities as dockers

I read that the soldered RAM is on some 8gb units but later ones are clipped in. But with the price of RAM it might be better to get the 4GB and add RAM….

Got this through Amazon for $700 last December Got the 8GB TS-464 Came with 2 SODIMM slots, an ADATA in one slot Replaced this with 2x Crucial DDR400 8GB Its a great unit Have a 2TB NVME (originally put in 2x 2TB Team Cardea Z440 NVME 4x4 , but took one out as no significant increase in speed with 4TB of SSD over 2 TB SSD)

I stuffed around with a terramaster and truenas and xpenology. With the amount of time I spent I should have just got a synology device.

Check out the software, specs and what you want to do eg 4k plex stream/transcoding, just backup.

Thank you, I think I am exactly where you are right now. this was my suspicion.

Though I do like playing around, fixing and breaking things currently I would like a stable and easy to set up solution and I’ll expand that in the future with DIY stuff I think.

So I’ll get a user friendly solution going first and update/upgrade with time!

I do have a Jellyfin set up and want to be able to use this as transcoding to 2-3 clients along with running some other light server tasks maybe.

I have Wyse 5070 and Optiplex 7070 for future server needs. So I want something decently fast in terms of data transfer and also enough processing power.

Someone suggested ASUSTOR AS5404T, seems like is a good mix between hdds and SSD’s and good processor. So might just do that.

Photo backup is important to me and xpenology had a bit more of a seamless backup when I was looking into it.

I think East Digital is the best value place to get HDDs these days.

I can stream pretty easily as long as the resolution matches the device ie good as long as it doesn't need to lower the resolution, so my google home hub won't play 720p videos but 4K is fine through my nvidia shield. Streaming works fine with plex pass, just need good internet connection.

I manually transfer files from my PC to the NAS and found that FreeFileSync works quite well and filebot for renaming shows and movies.

Yeah the soldered RAM is a bummer… I ended up getting a Synology DS923+ for this reason.

I could not find a 4GB TS-464 model anywhere, as they seem to be discontinued.

So is the only option 8GB soldered RAM?

I just bought my 8gb ram model from the FUTU online ebay store. The ram was not soldered on so I just added more ram and it works a treat.

Model sold and advertised is N5905 but when I received and checked it was 5105. This is the model which you're able to upgrade the RAM.

I'd like to share my experience with the QNAP TS-664-4G NAS, which is a 6-disc version of the TS-464. I loaded mine with two WD Red 20TB discs in late 2022. One thing to note is that this unit is very loud, and you can hear every movement of the HDDs inside. Additionally, the case produces a specific vibrating noise that disappears when the top of the case is pressed with a hand, but returns when the hand is removed.

I'm curious if users with the 4-disc version of this NAS (TS-464) experience the same noise issues. If so, have you found any workarounds or solutions?

Sounds like a defect unit. vibrating noise is unusual my ts-464 unit is not like that.

I put 2x12TB, 2X14TB seagate drives and 2 WD SSDs inside the unit. it has noise but is very gentle most of the time.

If you do torrent don't do it directly on HDD can be very noisy.

I have both a 464 and a 664 and wouldn't say that one was more noisy than the other any more than you'd expect for having 2 more (or less) drives. You can certainly tell when the drives are in use and wouldn't want one in your bedroom but it's fine in a study.

Main things that helped with me were putting them on carpet and adding an SSD to each and making them use that as much as possible. I started off using 2 SSDs as recommended by QNAP for redundancy but eventually decided that was massive overkill and now only use one.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I also installed one SSD drive for cache acceleration in my TS-664-4G, but didn't notice a significant improvement in the noise level. Did you use your SSDs for storage or caching purposes? I wonder if there's a difference in noise reduction depending on how the SSDs are utilized.

I have another QNAP NAS, and older model, TS-670, which is solid like a tank and produces very little noise.

My 464 was a bit noisy on disc activity and wouldn't sleep. The plastic case seems to reverberate a bit. I have seen people wedge foam inside the panels. I could never find what was making my discs never sleep so I backed it up to a portable HDD, pulled out the 3.5's, got two 500gb m.2 SSD's and made them a storage pool to put the OS and apps on. After setting it up with the m.2's I put the 3.5's back in and made them into another pool. It doesn't seem to access the discs much now, which cuts down the noise.
