3 RSCJ Meet in St. Louis with Open Hearts, Transformed by the Spirit P art family reunion, part retreat, part business meeting, a provincial assembly is, at its heart, a time to come together. Yes, there are meetings and updates and planning sessions, but this past July 18-22, when more than 230 RSCJ and lay colleagues gathered in St. Louis, what mattered most was the opportunity to renew bonds as daughters of Sophie in an atmosphere of hope. The assembly theme, Open Hearts, Transformed by the Spirit, proved to be prophetic. The RSCJ of the U.S. province arrived with hearts open, ready to listen and share their passionate commitment to their God, their mission and each other, ready to be transformed by the Spirit. 4 The assembly began in the most beautiful of ways: with a moving liturgy at which Juliet Mousseau, RSCJ, professed her first vows in front of a standing room only congregation in the Shrine of St. Philippine duch*esne at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, St. Charles. James Voiss, SJ, presided at the Mass, and Ellen Collesano, RSCJ, gave the reflection. Provincial Paula Toner, RSCJ, received Sister Mousseau s vows on behalf of the Society and later sent her on her mission, to teach at Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. The following day, Sister Toner and her leadership team Sisters Anne Byrne, Margaret Causey, Mary Charlotte Chandler, Melanie Guste, Mary Kay Hunyady and Susan Maxwell gave an overview of their priorities and undertakings as they approached the end of their three-year term. Diane Roche, RSCJ, reviewed the first thirty years of the U.S. Province, and Imma De Stefanis, RSCJ, wowed the crowd with the JPIC Passion Project, a video of images showing what RSCJ care about. Lay colleagues played an important role in this assembly. Associates, provincial staff, board members, alumnae, representatives from Network schools and ministerial co-workers were encouraged to participate actively in conversations and planning sessions an explicit acknowledgment of their role as partners in mission. Many of the collaborators spoke of the inspiration they have found in RSCJ, and their desire to help further the mission of the Society. Lori Wilson, campus minister at Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich, noted that she had recently returned from a trip to Uganda with other Network educators, just one example of lay collaborators living the mission of the Society. What Sacred Heart educators have learned from the witness of the Religious, Wilson said, is that it is not enough to develop minds. We want to develop hearts. The thirty-five lay colleagues were not there merely as a cheering section; they brought thirty-five different perspectives and valuable practical counsel. While this assembly was a gathering of members of the U.S. Province, there was a strong international flavor. Eleven RSCJ from eight different provinces participated in the table discussions, the liturgies and the socializing. One evening s sessions were devoted to sharing from these international RSCJ, as well as U.S. members who have served outside the United States. Cecile Meijer, RSCJ, the Society s non-governmental organization representative at the United Nations, placed the Society s mission in the context of the world, with an emphasis on how we work for social justice around the world. 5 Jesus calls us to a personal encounter with Him. He wants to make known to us the feelings and preferences of His Heart. Incoming Provincial Barbara Dawson, RSCJ, spoke on behalf of her team, made up of Sisters Margaret Causey, Sheila Hammond and Diana Wall, with a forward-thinking presentation, reviewing what she s heard from the province about priorities for the future. There is a strong commitment to justice and peace, she said, and a fervent desire to bring our charism to the issues of the day the environment, immigration, conflict and violence the broken education system. Acknowledging that the Society has always responded to the world s needs, the question becomes what are the needs that cry out for our response? We will go forward on the road that has brought us to where we are, Sister Dawson said. This is my hope for our province: to stand on the strong shoulders of our foremothers and walk firmly into the future. 6 August 31, 2012 Dear Sacred Heart Family and Friends, Now and then in our lives we will have an experience that makes us say It doesn t get any better than this! or This is heaven on earth! Everything else falls away at that moment, and Life is good! We are tempted to wish that it could stay this way, like Peter, James and John at the Transfiguration, and our faith tells us that someday such a feeling will be lasting. In reality, however, life goes on, as it did for the three apostles: And looking up, they saw only Jesus. Jesus came down the mountain with them. Later the story of that experience got told, over and over again, to this day, because it is our nature to recall and retell the experiences where we glimpse the fullness of life. You are holding in your hands just such a story that is so good in the telling. At the provincial Assembly in July were gathered about 230 members of the extended family of the Sacred Heart, and there we had a glimpse of who we are now. Forming the core of the Assembly, there were more than 200 of the province community of 330 RSCJs, from throughout the United States, whose lives are devoted to a multifaceted mission of education in the Church. The thread that runs through their various works is the goal, the end of the Society to discover and make known the love of the Heart of Jesus in the world. Present, too, were colleagues from a variety of places and settings who share life and mission with the RSCJs. You can see the spirit of the Society s motto, Cor Unum et Anima Una in Corde Jesu, in their faces and in the faces of the many people at gatherings during this year. Read the long lists of friends, colleagues, associates each one, and all of you benefactors: those who do good, at times on the mountain top and at times in the trenches shoulder to shoulder with the RSCJ in living out this work of love. In my thirteen years in Society leadership, I have had the remarkable privilege of being part of many large and small gatherings of the Sacred Heart family, and so often I have felt, it doesn t get any better than this! It was true, too, for our new Provincial, Sister Barbara Dawson, who was provincial for six years in the 1990s and who has now been called anew into leadership. She has responded to the call with a wholehearted, enthusiastic YES! Together we will enjoy her and her new provincial team in the coming years as new ways appear to further this sacred and beautiful mission. My own heart is full of peak experiences to savor, with deepest gratitude to you who are such good friends. We will find ourselves together again in gatherings such as those portrayed in this storybook wherever our journeys take us. 7 August 31, 2012 Dear Sacred Heart Family and Friends, At the recent provincial assembly for the Society of the Sacred Heart we celebrated the life of the Society today and the lives of all of those remarkable women who have prayed for us, inspired us and led us to this point in our history, specifically the thirty-six RSCJ who have died since we last gathered together in We stand on the shoulders of those women who revealed the love of the Heart of Christ wherever they were, in whatever they did, to whomever they were sent. I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me. I am stronger for their courage; I am wiser for their words. They are saints, and they are human; they are angels; they are friends I imagine our world if they hadn t tried; we wouldn t be here celebrating today. I will stand a little taller; I will work a little longer, and my shoulders will be here to hold the ones who follow me. Joyce Johnson Rouse All who gathered in assembly in July, lay and religious, listened deeply to where God is calling us today at this time in our history when the Gospel of Love and the Heart of Christ seem more urgently needed than ever. The Society s motto since St. Madeleine Sophie s day, Cor Unum et Anima Una in Corde Jesus, one heart and one mind in the Heart of Christ, is the ongoing invitation from our God to create communion wherever we go, whatever we do. This year s annual report reflects the ongoing life and mission of the family of the Sacred Heart RSCJ, associates, alumnae/i, Network schools, co-workers, families and friends and the great generosity of you, our benefactors who turn hopes into reality. It is because of you that we continue to have a vital spiritual and educational mission and have the means to care for our elderly sisters. Our gratitude is immense and our prayer for you is daily. We have a few miles to go before we complete our $40,000,000 In Mission for Life campaign, but we are so close. Please participate in raising the final $4,500,000. Thank you. We express our special gratitude to Sister Paula Toner and her provincial leadership team, Sisters Susan Maxwell, Mary Kay Hunyady, Mary Charlotte Chandler, Melanie Guste, Margaret Causey and Anne Byrne, for their leadership of the province during the past three very challenging economic years. 10 In Mission for Life The In Mission for Life campaign is a comprehensive fundraising effort including: major gifts/pledges, annual giving, and planned giving/realized bequests. Through the gifts and pledges, the province goal is to raise $40,000,000 for the spiritual and educational mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart and for elder care from this five-year campaign among friends, alumnae/i, families, associates, former members, collaborators and foundations. Although the annual appeal, some major gift solicitation and planned giving will continue far into the future, the regional campaigns will officially end on December 31. It has been a great production, playing all across the country during the past five years. The cast of characters has included RSCJ, associates, alumnae and alumni, Network schools and co-workers, families and friends, all on stage together, committed to keeping the great mission of the Society flourishing.
