This butterscotch steamer is a complete dream as it’s made with just a handful of ingredients and is ready in a record 5 minutes! It’s one of my go-to sweet treats during the fall and winter months and it just so happens to be 100% caffeine-free.

Butterscotch Steamer Recipe (1)

Seriously, it’s so hot and comforting with its classic butterscotch and caramel-like flavor! In my book, it’s the perfect recipe for those cozy evenings on the couch where you’re curled up with a good book and a comfy blanket!

I usually sprinkle my steamer with a bit of cinnamon to give it extra warmth and a bit of spice. But you can easily experiment with any topping you want.

I’d say that stirring through melted chocolate is a decent idea. But why not pop some whipped cream and marshmallows on for a different take on a typical hot chocolate?

Whatever you choose to do, I recommend having a few delicious cookies to hand for dipping.

Don’t get me wrong, this recipe tastes great flying solo. But there’s nothing better than curing mid-afternoon munchies with bougie milk and cookies!

Now I’ll drink to that.

Why You’ll Love This Butterscotch Steamer

  • It’s ready in 5 minutes!
  • It’s packed with warming flavors and is ridiculously creamy.
  • The smooth texture and rich caramel-like flavor will suit the entire family.
  • Perfect for any season but is particularly comforting during the wintertime.

Ingredients

The full printable recipe card with measurements and instructions is found at the bottom of the post.

  • Milk. I suggest using whole milk for extra creaminess, but you shouldn’t lose too much flavor with low or nonfat milk.
  • Butter. An essential ingredient for creating butterscotch!
  • Brown sugar. If you use darker sugar, there will be a deeper molasses flavor to your butterscotch steamer. Light brown or golden brown sugar also works well.
  • Cinnamon (optional)

Recipe Tips and Tricks

  • Make sure the milk is completely hot before removing it from the heat. Past that point, make sure it’s off the heat before you do anything else!
  • To avoid getting buttery globs instead of a glorious butterscotch flavor, make sure your butter is completely melted.
  • This recipe should be sweet enough, but you can add a small dash of your favorite coffee syrup if you want even more. Vanilla is an excellent choice, but not many flavors will clash with the base recipe!

Variations and Substitutions

  • If you don’t want to sprinkle cinnamon on top, pumpkin spice can be a delicious alternative during the fall!
  • Specialty syrups are your friend here, but you can also switch up the flavor with melted chocolate. Otherwise, a drizzle of caramel sauce is an excellent idea for even more butterscotch flavor.
  • If you want to add a bit more balance to your butterscotch steamer, a small pinch of salt can dial down the sweetness slightly.

Storage Instructions

You can store this butterscotch steamer in the fridge for a couple of days in a covered mug or airtight container.

To bring it back to life, you can pop it in the microwave or heat it on the stove until it’s warmed through.

Can I Freeze?

I wouldn’t recommend freezing this butterscotch steamer as it’s just so easy to make fresh.

If you absolutely must, you can put it in individual freezer bags or an airtight container for up to 3 months.

To keep things safe, make sure you let it cool down fully first.

Also, defrost the recipe in the fridge to avoid any bacterial growth!
